Many moms wonder, from time to time, what they could do to earn extra income for the home, or just help out a little with the finances. To that end, I have compiled numerous ideas; some of which you may be interested in implementing. Here are some things you may not have thought of already:
• Post a resume at Craigslist – it’s free!
• Start going to garage sales and buying quality items you can sell on Craigslist or
• Ebay (there is no charge to sell on Craigslist)
• Shop thrift stores for items to sell
• Plan a neighborhood garage sale
• Contact a legitimate business in order to start your own from their franchise
• (Tupperware, Mary Kay, Arbonne, Pampered Chef, Avon, Gold Canyon Candles,
• etc)
• If you have computer skills, look into jobs that you can do from home (lots of
• postings at Craigslist!)
• If you are an EARLY morning person, consider delivering the newspaper for 2
• hours each day to earn extra cash
• Print out flyers offering to be a dog walker for the working families in your
• neighborhood (some people make great extra income doing this!)
• If you have time, start up your own small business by coming up with a product
• or service that you know people could or would use (you might need a website for
• this)
• If you are able to do childcare from your home or travel to another home for this,
• offer your services to friends, family, neighbors, or post a resume online or on
• local school bulletin boards (if allowed) – lots of parents are looking for quality
• childcare!
• Join a mom’s group in order to meet new people and get new ideas OR share your
• own (such as MOPS or other social networking groups)
• If you are talented at creating crafts, etc, begin your own business and show off
• your work at local craft fairs, school events, etc (might have to rent table space for
• this)
• Offer to be a “floater” babysitter for anyone you know who might like to have an
• on-call person in case of emergencies
• Look into doing part-time receptionist or secretarial jobs while your kids are in
• school
• Post a resume offering to be a personal assistant for a family who may need
• errands run, etc – your kids could go with you in the car if agreed upon at hire
• If you are good with kids and know how to teach little ones to swim, offer swim
• lessons from your back yard pool (if you have one; AND you may need to look
• into special insurance coverage to do this). I had my own child learn to swim this
• way and we paid $10 per half hour lesson – great deal for private lessons and she
• had LOTS of clients!
• Network your skill, trade, or service online or via local networking groups (like
• the ones associated with each city’s Chamber of Commerce)
• Advertise on any website you can for free, in their yellow pages, etc
• Gather up all the items in your home that you no longer need or use (we all have
• them!) and sell them online or in a yard sale
• If you are musical, offer music lessons from home for less than what someone
• would pay a “professional”
• If you are skilled at photography, offer part-time services for various events for
• less than clients would pay a professional photographer
• If you are skilled in any subject or area, offer to be a tutor from home (math,
• English, writing, computers, science, etc)
• If you are trained in beautician services (hair/nails, etc), consider working from
• home part-time
• Look into businesses that need part-time help with home visits for the elderly, or
• help with special needs children
• Search for and purchase any quality books from yard sales or antique shops that
• you can sell online
• If you are a seamstress, contact some local drycleaners and offer your on-call
• services if they are not already contracted with a seamstress for their customers
• If your own children are in school, look into working part-time at a local school
• (preschool, elementary, junior high or high school) to be a classroom aid (many
• schools now require at least an AA for this position; check out their websites for
• more info)
Best wishes in all your business endeavors!
